Married to the Sea
Source: Married to the Sea

Yes! I have finished up all of my assignments for this week. I’ve got plenty for next week, but now I can catch up on my sleep – I have quite the defecit.

Plans for tonight:

  1. Get some groceries – I’m all out of food
  2. Resist urge to buy an XBox 360 (they’re $100 off near trader joe’s)
  3. SLEEP.

I’ll be sane by Thursday evening.

For a little while, at least.

If my brain had voicemail, this is the message you would be getting at the moment:

Hello, I can’t come to the phone right now. I’m currently out of the office and will return Thursday evening. Please leave a message. If you’re inquiring about additional problem sets, you can shove it up your @#$&*%.

Thanks, My Brain.

Back to work.

Nerd Club

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Here’s a comic from Toothpaste for Dinner that sums up my situation at the moment.

Toothpaste for Dinner

If you replace “nerd club” with CS153 (Compilers), that’s how my days have been going. Sadly, i’m in the second category.

I didn’t really get that much work accomplished over Thanksgiving break and now I’m paying for it. It’s not that I didn’t do much work (quite the contrary, just ask half of my extended family) but it didn’t really accomplish much. Apparently I didn’t understand what a “type scheme” was. It’s not a terribly fun thing to figure out.

I think that assignment is pretty much done. Hopefully I can the problem set for another class wrapped up soon too and do something fun, like work on other projects.

Crap.

Weather Alerts for Stalkers

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

If you’re going to Florida today, bring a fire-retardant suit

I just finished a project for my Internet Sensor Networks class. You can put in some weather-related query terms and it will show you matching weather alerts in the USA on a map. It will also show you any webcams that are nearby, so you can enjoy the lovely carnage.

You can check the site out here. I would suggest using “1″ for a webcam search radius. There’s a few small bugs but I’m a grad student now so you can shut up about those things. I’ve got far more important things to do (hopefully) than figure out why IE doesn’t animate the “please wait” image. Firefox does it quite nicely.

Beware, this page takes a while to load and may be slow if you have a lot of matching weather alerts

My Cold is Gone, Now Suffering from Grad-Studentitis

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

Melody got me sick last week and I’d been nursing a cold. I drank lots of water, got lots of sleep, and invested heavily in Sudafed/Tylenol. I’m fine now. However, I seem to be on some watch list as a possible Meth chemist. I’ve never had a convenience store take so much information down about me for a $10 purchase. They wouldn’t even tell me why they needed my info.

However, now that I’ve gotten into the full swing of being a grad student, I have the compulsion to always work. Mostly this is because I should always be working. No matter what I get done, there’s always some other project, exam, reading that needs to happen. Even if I’m reading one thing, I’ll feel guilty because I should be starting some other problem set.

I took a break last night and went to Ikea. The bottom of my Aneboda bed frame fell out, which is not terribly conducive to sleeping. As I needed to sleep at some point, I took apart the bed and took it back. I ended up getting the Malm frame. They stopped selling my #1 color, Beech Veneer, though so I had to go with stupid Birch Veneer. I was up until 1AM putting the bed together, but I love assembling Ikea so it wasn’t a big deal. Getting up at 6AM to do my work wasn’t terribly fun though. At that point it was more of a “I have to do this” and less of a “hmm, I should do this.”

I gotta take some photos. And be funnier too.
