What’s a visit with Melody without stopping at a mall?

Not a visit with Melody.

China Pearl: Good Dim Sum if it’s Not Cold

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

Melody and I just got back from dim sum at China Pearl in Boston Chinatown.
The food was pretty average except for one cart which was unapologetically cold. We did get there at 1:30 though, which is after the main rush.
Most of the food was good and we were seated fast. We got a calamari-ish dish and fried dumplings from the first cart. They tasted good but were at room temperature. We asked the roaming host to have it heated and he grudgingly did. He seemed to think warm food was too much to ask.
The rest of the food was good. The Siu mai, chives buns, and turnip cake was good but there wasn’t anything adventurous.
Melody rates it 1.5 siu mai (out of 4)

Waiting for Dim Sum on the Subway

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

We’re on the subway right now. Melody knows a new restaurant in Boston Chinatown that we’ll try. This means I’m trusting her sense of direction. This also means I’m probably not getting dim sum today.

One Cookie To Rule Them All

I made chocolate chip macadamia cookies on monday for my workmates. But of course I saved the biggest one for me. Delicious…

Why I Buy Renter’s Insurance

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

When I woke up this morning it was warm in my room. It’s been nice lately, but today was downright tropical.
Apparently leaving your oven on overnight at 350 degreesF makes your apartment feel tropical. Probably not the most energy efficient way to heat your home. I’m sure Seattle Light (i.e. the electric company) is my new best friend.
When I came home this evening my room still felt like the tropics on a hot day. Apparently leaving your oven on Broil over the entire day will do this. Also, apparently Broil is not the same as Off.
I’m now Seattle Light’s BFF.

Acacia Teriyaki – My Teriyaki Enabler

Monday, April 24th, 2006

This is the closest restaurant to my work.

The cafeteria isn’t the most popular so this place gets pretty crowded during lunchtime. But I ate too much Easter candy and I’m eatting lunch at 2pm.
The food is pretty simple but good. I like the spicy chicken which comes with a salad and a crazy amount of rice. There’s also a ton of chicken so I rarely eat the whole thing.
They have no pretense of serving real Japanese food which bodes well with one of my coworkers. It’s clear the availability of cheesesticks make Acacia the only “Asian” restaurant he visits.

Brick

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

I saw Brick last night with Siri.
BrickMovie.jpg
I really enjoyed this movie. I saw the movie at 10pm and didn’t even come close to falling asleep. Since I seem to be borderline narcoleptic, this is truly an endorsement.
The main character is the teenager from “3rd Rock From the Sun” although I didn’t realize it until I came home and started looking up info on the interwebs. Although, I was looking up info because I didn’t get half of the movie (although it seems no one did).
The movie’s a high school murder mystery filmed in noir style (although it is still in color). Parts seem silly and I wonder why they’re in the movie at all (mother feeding the kids apple juice during gang warfare, etc.) but funny nonetheless.
The main character gets beat up a lot though, and this is somewhat (although not completely) less comical.

Pancake Day!

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

Saturday is Pancake Day.
Pancake-cooking.jpg
Pancake day started about four saturdays ago. When I first came to Seattle, I went on a massive Costco shopping binge. In the madness, I acquired an enormous bag of pancake mix and a seemingly gallon-size container of “maple syrup.” Afer sitting in my cabinent for longer than I can remember, I decided that I needed to use my pancake supplies one breakfast at a time. And thus Pancake day was started.
While it started as a way just to use up stupidly purchased food I’m definitely enjoying it now. I also have a reason to get out bed before noon on the weekends. The pancakes are also increasing in quality now that I’ve got a solid method:

  1. Mix batter and water. This is an important step.

  2. Heat stovetop to Medium.

  3. Coat frying pan with Pam spray.

  4. Cook pancake for 60 seconds.

  5. Flip pancake with spatula (flipping with a pan toss results in a big mess roughly 50% of the time).

  6. Cook other side of pancake for 45 seconds.

  7. Eat pancake.

Note to Melody: I spelled “definitely” correctly this time.

Haircut on The Ave

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

Since moving to the U-District, I’ve been getting my hair cut at University Ave Barbering (42nd and University Ave). It’s not really a barbershop but a barbering area. Every time I go there not only do I get a different barber, but all of the barbers look different. It’s like the way a taxi company shares taxis with different drivers.
Last week’s barber was typical. At first. We were talking about the weather for a while, and then it got a bit silent. Usually I don’t do much talking at the barbershop since my interests tend to scare strangers (Adult Swim cartoons, monkeys, etc.).
About five minutes in it got a bit more interesting. He started telling me stories about life on the Ave which all seemed to revolve around jaywalking. My barber really did not like jaywalking. At all.
This is where it got a bit frightening. Toward the end of his jaywalking rant he would regularly stop cutting my hair and peer around directly in front of my face and stare at me while making a point. This makes for some very off-putting conversation. This happens while he transitions to his next rant about the cashier at Safeway. Apparently the cashier was paying more attention to the girls behind him. I can understand this upsetting you (although after a year I think I would calm down a bit) but when you describe it as “suffering from heterosexuality” as my barber did, it seems a bit odd.
It’s not often that I’m paying someone to hold blades up to my head while they tell me that liking women is a disease. Then again, if someone’s hold blades up to your head you choose your words wiseley. I decided on “Um, okay.”
He then started talking about some time when he bought a Simpsons DVD at Fred Meyer, but our time was up. Of course cartoons come up at the end. We had so much in common and yet I never knew until the end. After talking with a friend who also happened to have his hair cut by him, I realized that he loves animation as well. I’m really disappointed that he barely brought it up with me. Maybe I could have even weirded him out. Then again, maybe he just enjoys making his customers uncomfortable.
In the end, I got a great haircut as well. Then again, maybe I’m just suffering from Stolkholm Syndrome.
